Stradbroke Island Accommodation and Holiday FAQs

Q: What can I do on Stradbroke Island holidays?

A: You can do as much or as little as you'd like at Straddie.  Discover endless beaches, world heritage listed wetlands and lakes, wildflowers and native bushlands.  See wildlife in its natural habitat, from the majestic whales, dolphins, turtles and manta rays of the sea, to the shorebirds, koalas, wallabies and other marsupials on land.  Go off the beaten track for camping or 4WD safaris or pamper yourself with fine dining, massage and 4 star Stradbroke Island accommodation.  Get active with surfing, sandboarding, kayaking, boat and fishing charters, golf, bowls and scenic walks.  Or simply lie on the beach or relax by the pool with a good book! See Activities for a list of options.

Q: How do I get to North Stradbroke Island and how much does it cost?

A: You can take your car, 4WD or public transport to North Stradbroke Island. The cost varies depending on which option you take. To take your car or 4WD on a Sea Stradbroke car & passenger ferry will cost $122 return per vehicle (including the legal limit of passengers). It is extra to take a trailer, bus or truck. There are discounts available for North Stradbroke Island residents, Moreton Island residents and Seniors Card holders. As a "walk-on" passenger, it costs $10 return per adult and $5 return per child (5 - 14 yrs). Once on the island, you can catch a bus to Point Lookout.

Q: Can you transport my trailer, parcels or freight for me?

A: For insurance reasons, all trailers, boxes and other effects must be transported in a registered vehicle. This means that you will have to take a car across with the trailer attached and/or freight loaded inside. Even if you have a car waiting at the other end, we regret that transportation of freight on its own is not possible.

Q: Can I go whale watching on Straddie?

A: Yes! Land-based whale watching is very popular at Straddie and it's free! From May to November each year, the whales pass close by the coast on their annual migration from Antarctica to their calving grounds near the Great Barrier Reef.

The rocky outcrops at Point Lookout are ideal vantage points for land-based whale watching. The whales pass close to the island, so it is usually possible to see them without the aid of binoculars. You can spend a relaxing afternoon watching the whales from one of the picnic areas at the Point. Those wishing for a different viewpoint can take the Headlands walk. Starting at the Captain Cook memorial, there is a signed track all the way to North Gorge.

There are also 4WD whale watching tours available. See the Activities page for providers.

Q: When do I need to book Stradbroke accommodation for Christmas?

A: Peak holiday periods, such as Christmas, Easter and September school holidays are often booked out 6 months to a year in advance. Please plan as early as possible for these times!
