NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND - NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

Fresh water lakes

North Stradbroke Island has an outstanding freshwater lake system that has been listed as one of the world's most ecologically important wetlands.

Brown Lake

Ancient and alluring, Brown Lake is a place of great natural beauty easily accessed by car (4WD is not necessary).  A superb picnic site with picnic tables and BBQs. The natural bushland surrounding the lake is home to many delicate wildflowers, including small ground orchids.

To access Brown Lake, drive 3.5kms from the Big Red Cat ferry at Dunwich along the sealed Trans Island Road www.bigredcat.com.au

Keyholes

The Keyholes are a freshwater system of mysterious lakes and lagoons, which stretch over the 4.5 kilometres. These lakes are home to the island's massive open-air aviary of more than 250 species of native birds.
The Keyholes can only be accessed by 4WD. As you drive along East Coast Road from Amity to Point Lookout, take the 4WD track on the right hand side (called Fisherman's Road, although not signed) and follow it down past Main Beach to the Keyholes. If you are already on Main Beach, follow the 4WD track leading off the beach and turn left towards the Keyholes.

Blue Lake

Famed for its azure blue waters and array of wildlife, Blue Lake is a magical swimming spot located in the heart of Blue Lake National Park, approximately 8 kilometres west of Dunwich along Tazi Road.  Only recently reopened after a long period of closure for revegetation, Blue Lake can be accessed by 4WD only, or via a 20 minute walk from the carpark.

Beaches

As the second largest sand island in Australia, and with a near-perfect sub-tropical climate, North Stradbroke Island boasts endless white sandy beaches amongst the finest anywhere in the world.  From Dunwich to Amity Point on the Island's west are the gently lapping waters of Moreton Bay, with the sheltered waters providing many excellent fishing spots. Head north to Point Lookout and over to the Island's eastern shores for magnificent surf beaches, and from May - November, whale watching from the rocky outcrops of North Gorge.  Foreshore camping and 4WD access is allowed on some beaches, but permits are essential and must be arranged prior to arrival.  Ask us about organising your permits when you book your ferry.

Cylinder Beach

A picturesque cove nestled between Home Beach and Deadmans Beach on island's northern tip at Point Lookout, Cylinder Beach is a particular favourite amongst families.  Safe patrolled swimming, nearby BBQs and children's playground add to the attraction.  Surfing is available in select conditions.  No 4WD access allowed.

Flinders Beach

Located 19 kilometres north of Dunwich, Flinders Beach is a favourite location for beach camping.  Access is by 4WD only via the Adder Rock access road at Amity Point, Flinders Beach Drive enroute to Point Lookout, or via Home Beach at Point Lookout.  Four composting toilets are provided in small clearings behind the dunes.  Drinking water and beach shower provided at Adder Rock access road.

Home Beach

Home Beach lies on the islands northern shores between Flinders Beach and Cylinder Beach, Point Lookout.  A popular fishing spot which offers patrolled swimming during the holiday season and camping at Adder Rock Holiday Park which abuts the beach.

Main Beach

Situated on the island's eastern coast, over 30 kilometres of white sandy shores stretch along Main Beach.  On a clear day, the highrises of the Gold Coast can be seen along the beach to the southern horizon.  Pedestrian access is available from the Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club, or via 4WD from George Nothling Drive, Point Lookout or from the Trans Island Road out of Dunwich (at low tide).  Beach camping is allowed with permits, but no amenities or drinking water are provided.
